19.01.2009 Estonian leading bread manufacturer AS Leibur was the first bakery in Estonia to obtain the ISO 22000:2005 standard certificate on food safety management system. „Being Estonia’s largest and oldest bread producer, we are responsible to produce with as high quality as possible. We are truly proud that also Estonian bread manufacturers have now a reputable quality-sign, which is recognized in all over the world,“ Olli Johansson, the acting managing director of Leibur as of 2009, said. ISO 22000 certificate covers food safety management system of the Leibur main factory in Tallinn. The ISO 22000 standard means that the company guarantees its clients food safety starting from handling of the raw materials to manufacturing as well as handling the product to retailers. „Certificate will definitely raise the trust of our company in the eyes of consumers and for sure it is an important landmark in our 246-years-old history. Food safety and hygiene are elementary, but on the other hand very important issues,“ Merli Paas, the quality manager of Leibur said. ISO 22000 standard, a management system designed for food producers, unites HACCP, good manufacturing means and quality management system. Standard provides the company a systematic approach to the management system and will therefore raise the food safety level. The auditing and certification process of the ISO 22000 standard was carried out by Bureau Veritas Eesti OÜ, the certificate was handed over to Leibur on January 7, 2009. AS Leibur is Estonia’s leading and oldest bakery, which owns about one third of the local fresh bread market. Leibur produces about 50 different fresh bread products. In addition to the general market share, many of its products have a leading position in their segment, including Tallinna peenleib, Kirde sai, Rukkipala, Kuldne röstsai as well as Viljakas. Leibur is one of the founders of Estonian Bread Association. The company had a net turnover of 371 million kroons (EUR 24 mln) in 2007, while the amount of bakery produced was 25 million kg. Leibur employs 340 people. Leibur is a member of the international bakery group Vaasan & Vaasan, which is active in the markets of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
